Tennessee: Demand your legislator protect democracy and public health before the primary.

The Tennessee government has made it clear that they’re not going to respond to the coronavirus pandemic until people start dying — so how many body bags are acceptable? The Legislature, the Secretary of State, and the Governor have all abdicated responsibility and have made little effort to protect the public health and our democracy. When the Legislature reconvenes on June 1st, they must work to adopt the policies of the Vote Safe Tennessee platform to make sure that voters don’t have to choose between their health and their right to vote. Policies like voter registration by phone, extended registration deadlines, vote by mail, and extra accommodations for new and absentee voters are all necessary steps in protecting the public health and ensuring everyone has the right to vote. We still have time before the August 6th primary, but we have to act now. November 3, 2020 is the biggest election of our lives, and state legislators must be part of the solution of protecting democracy and public health. Otherwise, how many more body bags are acceptable?
