Trump is doing everything in his power to destroy the United States Postal Services (USPS) and make it impossible for voters to vote by mail during a pandemic -- slowing down Social Security checks and medications for seniors and veterans in the process. He's opposed emergency funding for the postal service and November elections contained in the House-passed Heroes Act, but denying USPS the funds it needs is only a part of his larger plan.
This is unacceptable – the Postal Service is not a tool of any political party, and it cannot be treated as such.
On August 22, the House returned from recess to pass the Delivering for America Act, written by Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), to respond to Trump's political games. Every Democrat and 26 Republicans voted for this critical bill. The Delivering for America Act would prohibit the Postal Service from implementing any changes to the operations or level of service it had in place on January 1, 2020, until the COVID-19 pandemic has ended, and it would provide $25 billion to make up for pandemic-related losses. This legislation would maintain current service standards as well as the integrity of our elections and bedrock democratic principles.
The bill is now sitting on Mitch McConnell’s desk, and it’s up to us to make sure he hears from senators that letting this bill die is not an option. Trump continues to bash the Postal Service, and criticized McConnell for just holding a hearing to discuss mail delays across the country. But even Republican senators are feeling the heat from constituents complaining about mail delays and expressing concerns about the upcoming election. We all need to continue to make our voices heard, ensuring every senator knows we are watching.
The Senate MUST take up the Delivering for America Act and pass it immediately.
